We are never deprived of needs, we are deprived of desires.
Meaning
This verse says something very true about human suffering in simple words. At its core, it says that our basic needs, like food, shelter, safety, and connection, are almost never completely unmet in the grand framework of existence. Even if we have to fight for it, nature, society, and our own efforts usually work together to keep us going. But wants? The never-ending desire for more—bigger homes, better relationships, more excitement, status, or fantasies—these are what make us feel empty and hungry. We chase them without stopping, thinking they are needs, and that's where the real lack is. It's not that you don't have bread; it's that you want caviar when bread would be fine. This difference makes us think: Are we really lacking, or are we just never happy?
